HOA 2020 Board Nominations


We are going to be interviewing potential Board members soon.

Please contact Bob Weisblum if you are interested in serving on the 2020 HOA Board of Directors, no later than Sunday, November 17, 2019.

Responsibilities include attending a majority of Board meetings and General meetings, and actively participating in a committee of choice. We would also like a brief resume.

We are looking for representation from both north and south of Ives including, but not limited to the Highland Lakes, Highland Gardens, Skylake, Coventry, Presidential and Oak Forest areas.

Skylake Highland Lakes Area HOA Newsletter – Reaching Over 3200 Households!

Once a Year the Sky Lake – Highland Lakes Area HOA mails a newsletter to each home in our community. We reach over 3,200 households covering approximately 10,000 residents. We also provide additional newsletters to local businesses in the community to distribute to customers.

Miami Dade County Commission Emergency Meeting

The Miami Dade County Commission is holding an emergency meeting Friday, October 11, 2019 at noon at the Stephen P Clark Government Center located at 111 N.W. 1st St, Miami, FL 33128 to discuss an agreement with Virgin Trains to build the “Aventura Station”. 

If at all possible, please attend this very important meeting which could have long term impacts on our community.

BIRD WALK at Highland Oaks Park – Sunday Sept 22nd

It’s songbird migration time! Highland Oaks Park is in the top ten Audubon birding sites in North Miami Dade County. More than 150 species make their home or migrate through the park.

Join us with experienced Audubon ornithologist Smith as we view dozens of beautiful and rare songbirds and waterfowl. This Sunday at 8 am, meet at Highland Oaks Park Community Center.

Guard Gates Closed

Miami Dade County has started the process (way too early) of shutting down the Special Taxing District Guard Gates in the area, and I am not sure when they will reopen.

The Skylake Highland Lakes Area HOA has contracted with Kent Security and will be paying the cost, to provide a roving security guard for both north and south of Ives beginning Saturday night.  These shifts will run from 10 PM – 6 AM prior to the storm and will resume when it is safe. This service will run for up to 7 days if needed. 

The HOA would like to remind you to please take to the time to renew your membership or join today if you have not already.

Your nominal $30 yearly membership fee helps fund emergency needs such as this.

Neighborhood Prep for Hurricane

I wanted to let everyone know that the Skylake Highland Lakes Area HOA is currently working on our Hurricane prep for the entire area covered by the HOA. One of the biggest challenges we face as an underserved, unincorporated area has been access to services post storm.

We have taken the lessons learned after Hurricane Irma in 2017, and put plans in place regarding police, security and our CERT (Community Emergency Response Team).

State Sen. Pizzo has offered the full assistance of his staff to help us with any resources needed at the state level, including FPL, which has always been a challenge.

We have reached out to Kent Security and put them on stand by to provide roving security if needed. This service will be paid for by the HOA and cover both the north and south of Ives areas. We have also reached out to Miami-Dade PD to make sure they patrol the area as well.

The CERT team has emergency supplies and will stage them with our team members throughout the area. We have also purchased additional emergency supplies for use post-storm. I will post more info on CERT later today.

If you are not already a member of the HOA, now is a great time to join.

Public Space Challenge Finalist!

Several weeks ago our very own Bob Weisblum, Government Affairs & Grants Chairperson, brought to the Boards attention that the Miami Herald printed a story regarding The Miami Foundation running a grant contest. They were seeking ideas from residents who wanted to improve their communities and foster neighborliness.

The focus was on pedestrians, cyclists, streets, sidewalks, crosswalks, bus stops, public transit stations, bike lanes, running paths, boat ramps, and waterways. Projects that are adopted would share in $250,000 in grant money. Besides himself entering two project ideas, we would like to thank Board Members Bill Clayton, Marc Frankel, Jacci Seskin, and Bari Schanerman for taking the time and effort in submitting their ideas.

Nearly 300 ideas were submitted and we are proud to say that one of our Board Members entries was chosen among the 34 finalists, congrats Bob!  The entry that is a finalist has to do with the intersections of Ives Dairy Road and 24th Avenue and Miami Gardens Drive and West Dixie Highway.  It involves a design of vivid colors of boxes with signage “DO NOT BLOCK THE BOX’. The purpose is to keep traffic flowing with no standing vehicles in the intersection.

Upon notification of being a finalist, Bob along with Board President Rick Schermer and previous Board President Marc Hurwitz began to contact the county (jurisdiction over Ives Dairy Road) and the state (Miami Gardens Drive). The county refused at this time to a sit-down and discussion, but State Representative Watson and State Senator Pizzo loved the idea. Both have voiced support and Senator Pizzo has forwarded a letter of support to the Miami Foundation regarding the project.

The winners will be named in September and a winning entry can receive up to $25,000 in grant money. The final entry has to submit a lot of paperwork including a budget and costs of implementation and other tasks needed.

This project is in the name of the Homeowners Association and if we are one of the winners we would like to call upon you, our neighbors, to volunteer some time and effort as needed. The winner will have until October of 2020 to complete the task. We will keep you updated as news arrives!
